Communication icons that clarify the conversation
Communication icons help people recognize how to contact someone, where to find a message and what kind of exchange is taking place. A speech bubble can identify a conversation, an envelope can represent email, and a phone can introduce a call. Use these graphics in support centers, messaging interfaces, collaboration tools and presentation slides. Start with the action a person needs to take. Reading a message, composing a reply and sending it are different steps, so avoid assigning one vague symbol to all three. Pair important actions with labels, especially when a click will immediately contact another person.
Search chat, email, calling and feedback symbols
Try chat, message, speech bubble, envelope, email, phone, video or microphone. Chat icons can identify threaded discussions, while email icons can distinguish inbox and contact features. For customer feedback, a conversation symbol may be more appropriate than a broadcast megaphone. Think about direction as well: send, receive and reply often need different cues. If a search for a broad communication concept feels imprecise, use the physical object or familiar interface element behind it. A microphone can represent voice input, for example, but should not be used as a generic message icon when the feature accepts only typed text.
Build messaging interfaces with clear states
Keep communication icons consistent across navigation, message lists and action buttons. Use a related family for chat bubbles, call controls and attachments so the interface feels connected. Show states such as unread, muted or disconnected with more than color alone, and explain unfamiliar badges with readable text. For video or voice tools, make recording and microphone states especially clear. Test the symbols at the smallest size used in the product; tiny dots or lines inside a bubble can disappear. In an informational page, use larger communication graphics sparingly so they guide the reader without overwhelming the conversation or support instructions.
